Click-to-message ads explained
Click-to-message ads open a chat in Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp. See how they work, how to set them up and how to measure real conversations.

Click-to-message ads send a person to a chat thread with your business instead of a website. The destination can be Messenger, Instagram Direct or WhatsApp, depending on what you connect and what is available in your market.
How they work
A person sees your ad, taps the button, and a conversation opens with a pre-filled message or a set of quick-reply options. From there, your team or an automated flow answers questions, qualifies the person and moves toward a booking, quote or sale.
They suit businesses where buyers want to ask a question first: services, high-consideration products, local businesses and anything with complex options. They are weaker when your product sells itself on a landing page and a chat adds friction.
Setting them up
In Ads Manager, you pick a campaign objective and then choose messaging apps as the conversion location at the ad set level. Meta’s current options and objective names change, so follow what the interface shows. You also choose which apps to connect and write the opening message.
Three pieces make a big difference:
- Greeting and quick replies. Preset questions, such as “What does it cost?”, reduce effort for the person.
- Automated first response. Reply fast, even if only to confirm and set expectations.
- Staffing. Someone must answer. A slow reply wastes the click you paid for.
What to measure
Meta reports conversations started, and cost per conversation started. This is cheap to get and easy to inflate, because a tap can start a chat that never goes anywhere. Treat it as an early signal, not the result.
The result is what happens afterward: qualified leads, appointments and sales. Compare cost per qualified lead across your chat ads and your other lead sources. Lead quality scoring helps you see which ads bring serious buyers, not just chatters.
Closing the measurement gap
Because the real outcome occurs inside a chat or in your CRM, Meta cannot see it unless you send it back. Conversion tracking through the pixel and Conversions API lets you report events such as a qualified lead or a purchase, so delivery can optimize toward real outcomes.
Common mistakes
The usual mistakes are measuring only conversations started, routing chats to an inbox nobody checks, and sending people to chat when they would have bought on a page. Some advertisers also skip the opening message, so people stare at a blank thread.
How YieldBI helps
YieldBI’s conversion tracking and attribution covers the Conversions API and offline conversions, which supports sending chat outcomes from your CRM back to Meta. Its ad-level signal analysis then shows which ads drive results beyond the first message.
