Preserving social proof with post IDs

Likes, comments and shares attach to a post ID. Learn how ad changes can reset social proof and how to reuse an existing post to keep it, plus when to avoid it.

Every Meta ad is delivered as a post, and that post has an ID. Reactions, comments and shares attach to that ID. When an ad gets a new post ID, the social proof it collected stays behind on the old one, and the ad starts again with zero engagement.

Why social proof matters

People read comments and reaction counts before they decide whether to trust a brand. An ad with hundreds of positive comments looks established. The same creative with no engagement looks new and unproven. Social proof tends to help most in cold audiences, where nobody knows you.

When the post ID changes

A new post ID is generally created when you build a fresh ad from scratch, and in some cases when you edit or duplicate one. Which actions create a new post, and which keep the old one, depends on how Meta handles that change. Meta’s current behavior can differ by edit type, so test before assuming. Common triggers include changing the creative, the primary text or the destination, and copying an ad into another ad account.

How to keep the same post

Ads Manager lets you build an ad from an existing post instead of uploading new creative. Choose the option to use an existing post, then select the post by its ID or from a list. The new ad then shows the engagement already attached to that post.

A few practical rules:

  • Record the post ID of every ad that earns strong engagement.
  • When you move a winning ad into a new ad set or campaign, reuse the existing post.
  • Use the same post for both testing and scaling, so proof carries between them.

Trade-offs

Reusing a post carries history with it, including bad comments. Review the thread before you reuse it, and hide or remove comments that break your rules. Reusing a post also means you cannot change the creative. If you want to edit the visual or the copy, you accept a new post ID and lose the old engagement.

A new ad set that reuses the creative still goes through its own learning phase, whatever happens to the post. Social proof does not skip that step.

Dark posts and page posts

Ads can run from posts that never appear on your Page feed, often called unpublished or dark posts. They collect engagement the same way. Posts that your Page published organically can be promoted too, and their organic engagement carries into the ad.

How YieldBI helps
